07 / Common questions
Blocked drain
questions, answered.
What causes most blocked drains?
Tree roots are the most common cause, followed by wet wipes and sanitary products, fat and grease build-up, and pipes that have cracked or collapsed with age. Older Hobart homes with clay or earthenware drains are particularly prone to root intrusion.
Can you clear a blocked drain same day?
In most cases, yes. Genuine emergencies, sewage backing up, multiple fixtures blocked, overflow at the gully, are attended 24/7.
Why does my drain keep blocking?
A drain that blocks repeatedly usually has a structural fault, not a build-up problem. A CCTV inspection shows whether roots have entered a joint or a section has cracked or collapsed. Clearing it again without diagnosing it just resets the clock.
Do I need a CCTV drain inspection?
For a one-off blockage, often not. For a recurring one, yes, it's the only way to see the actual cause and location rather than guessing.
What's the difference between clearing a drain and relining it?
Clearing removes the blockage. Relining repairs the pipe. If the pipe is sound, clearing is all you need. If it's cracked, collapsed or root-invaded, relining fixes it for the long term, from the inside, without excavation.
Should I use drain cleaner from the supermarket first?
We'd rather you didn't. Caustic drain cleaners can damage older pipework and rarely shift a real blockage, and if we do need to jet the line afterwards, they make the job less pleasant for everyone.
