07 / Common questions

Gas fitting
questions, answered.

Are all plumbers gas fitters?

No. Gas fitting is a separate licence. A plumber can't legally work on gas without it, so always check before booking, and ask for the licence number.

What should I do if I smell gas?

Don't touch light switches, power points or your phone, and put out any naked flames. If it's safe to do so, turn the gas off at the meter, or at the bottle if that's your supply. Open windows and doors, then get everyone outside. From outside, call 000 if there's a fire or immediate danger, and Tas Gas Networks on 1802 111 to report the leak. Then call us to find and repair it. Don't relight any appliance yourself.

What is a Type B gas appliance?

A gas appliance using more than 10 MJ/h that isn't covered by a certification scheme, so it can't be an off-the-shelf certified Type A unit. In practice that means large industrial and commercial plant: boilers, furnaces, kilns and large ovens. Type B appliances need individual approval before installation and must be commissioned by an authorised Type B gas fitter.

How often should gas appliances be serviced?

Manufacturers generally recommend annually, and it's worth doing before winter rather than during it. Regular servicing catches faults early and keeps appliances running efficiently.

Do you install gas hot water and ducted heating?

Yes. Installation, servicing and repair for both residential and commercial.
